On the one hand, we have RVA: young, hip, vibrant, artsy and doing pretty well for itself. On the other, we have Richmond, where one out of every five people is poor, where misery swirls around people’s ankles like a flooded campground and which, for the most part, is invisible.
In Our Opinion: Richmond does something good
This issue of The Virginia Defender hits the streets Oct. 28, just after National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (Oct. 20-26). We’re glad to see that Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney has taken the opportunity to use this week to help spread awareness in the city about the dangers of lead poisoning, especially to young children.
ANTI-RACISTS TARGET UDC’s 125th ANNIVERSARY
Nearly 40 anti-racist activists – Black, Latinx, Asian and white – gathered today in Richmond for a demonstration outside the national headquarters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Their lead banner boldly proclaimed the reason for the protest: “UDC: Celebrating 125 Years of Racist Lies!”

President Donald J. Trump spoke today in Jamestown at Virginia’s official event marking the 400th anniversary of the founding of the House of Burgesses. The colonial-era institution later morphed into the present-day Virginia General Assembly, giving rise to the claim that the state’s legislature is the Western Hemisphere’s oldest continuing representative body. Bullcrap.
