Unions & allies celebrate at 2nd annual Union Fest

By Kat McNeal

RICHMOND, VA, May 5 — More than 130 union members and supporters gathered in Byrd Park yesterday for “Union Fest,” an event celebrating organized labor. This was the second year organizers held the event, which commemorates May Day, also called International Workers Day.

This year the event was sponsored by the Virginia Commonwealth University Chapter of United Campus Workers; Service Employees International Union locals 512 and 32BJ; Teamsters Local 322; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 666; Richmond Democratic Socialists of America; and Richmond for All.

The festivities included music, food and drinks, activities for children, silk-screening of t-shirts at the Studio Two Three mobile print truck and an ice cream truck. All sponsoring organizations had informational tables, as did invited guests: Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Union; Virginia Poverty Law Center; and Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality.

Here are some photos we took.

The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Union brought two inflatables: “Scabby the Rat,” a fixture of labor actions since the 1990s, and a “Fat Cat” figure holding a construction worker by the neck.
